Science 9-12 Earth/Environmental Essential Standards

Please use this Blog to share your concerns and suggestions about the the proposed Essential Standards for Grades 9-12 in Earth/Enviromental Science. When you make comments please identify the goal and objective by number. If you make suggestions, please state your rationale. Using all entries, I will compose a final report to our central office to be submitted to DPI for feedback from the LEA. This document will be our new curriculum for the next 5 years, so it is important that we work to make it the best it can be!

Science Grades 3-5 Essential Standards

I agree it seems the goals have been doubled (4 to 8). There are more specific goals, but how can we cover 2 every nine weeks?

The Highs and Lows of Sea Breezes

This 8 minute movie is focused on the creation of High and Low pressure areas and how it causes sea and land breezes. A pre- or post-activity would be to do a controlled experiment using a cup of room temperature water and a cup of room temperature sand with thermometers in them. Put a heat lamp over both of them, or simply take them outside on a bright sunny day. This give evidence to specific heat and the idea that substances do not heat up (or cool down) at the same rates. Please feel free to offer suggestions and comments about how you were able to use the movie.
Disclaimer: This was my first shot at making movies. I do not think the big producers have anything to worry about!!

Jell Cell Activity

I mentioned a jello cell activity that I did with my students and thought I'd put it on the blog for everyone.

From the 8th grade sharing session, we identified 2 objectives in each goal in which we want to focus. Please post ideas/suggestions/activities to share that might help us address these objectives. When you post, please identify the goal and objective by name. The attachment will open in Inspiration. If attachment will not open, save it to your desktop and then open Inspiration and then open file.

Great Meeting!

The 8th Grade Sharing Session was really useful. I enjoyed meeting teachers from across the county. Thanks for the email about "How do you Stack Up" Beth.
